Typica is one of the oldest and most genetically pure varieties of Arabica coffee, with a significant presence in Indonesia, where it has developed unique characteristics due to the country's diverse climate and growing conditions. Introduced to Indonesia in the 17th century by the Dutch, Typica was one of the earliest coffee varieties cultivated in the country. It was initially planted on the island of Java and later spread to other islands, including Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Bali.
Most Typica coffee is grown on islands with altitudes ranging from 1,000 to 1,600 meters above sea level, where the volcanic soils provide rich nutrients that enhance the coffee plantation. Indonesia’s tropical climate, with its high humidity and ample rainfall, contributes to the unique flavors of Indonesian Typica.
In Indonesia, Typica coffee is often processed using wet-hulling, one of the most distinctive methods employed in the country. This process involves removing the parchment layer while the coffee is still wet, resulting in a unique flavor profile characterized by lower acidity and a heavier body. It also imparts characteristic earthy and herbal notes to the coffee.
